I recently had the opportunity to share the Vivacity story with Out & About Communications, a San Diego based marketing firm. Below is an excerpt from that interview:
Vivian Sayward, the founder of Vivacity Sportswear joins our community by sharing about her Southern Californian based activewear line and the exciting adventures of an e-commerce business (all while being well-dressed)! Take it away, Vivian…
Please tell us a little about Vivacity. How did you get started?
My business idea was inspired on the golf course – and my closet! I started my business, Vivacity Sportswear, because I could not find anything well made, comfortable and fashionable to wear on the golf course.
A few years back, I started to play golf with my husband John, an avid golfer. He soon grew tired of waiting for me as I went through my closet figuring out what the heck I was going to wear on the course: I did not want to look like an undersized man (i.e. men’s polo shirt cut short and called a woman’s top) or worse. Finally one day John called me on it – “I’m tired of you complaining. Either do something about it or deal with it!” Hence Vivacity was born.
I feel very lucky that I work with some of the most talented pattern makers, fabric cutters and sewing contractors, all located right here in San Diego. They have taught me so much about the apparel industry – they are truly my partners in this endeavor and I’m proud to say that thanks to them I can continue to produce all our products in San Diego, California!
Vivacity is currently carried in golf pro shops, resorts, and specialty boutiques in Southern California, the Southeast and the Southwest of the US. We’ve also had customers as far away as Japan, Europe and South America.
Which product is your favorite? Why?
I really don’t have any one “favorite” piece. To be honest, I wear Vivacity every day because our items are comfortable, stylish, easy to care and coordinate well with other pieces in my wardrobe.
Lately since it’s been so warm and humid in San Diego, I’ve been wearing our M Skort, made out of Recycled PET® (79% recycled polyester made out of plastic bottles!!/21% spandex). It’s a fun flirty skort with convenient front pockets and works well with a lot of different tops and sweaters in my closet. The fabric is so light and comfortable as well as durable. I’ve washed the heck out of my skort and it still looks brand new!
This season I’ve also been wearing our best selling Holly Dress on the golf course as well as at business meetings and networking events. Our fantastic Creative Director and Designer, Christina Zeller, created this colorful floral print: the dress is color blocked with black and carbon for a flattering silhouette. Women have stopped me on the street to ask about the dress!
