Inside the Naeem Khan fashion show benefitting The Old Globe Theatre

Do you remember the stunning, silver, sleeveless beaded tulle gown that the First Lady Michelle Obama wore to present the “Best Picture” Oscar to Argo? Or how about the other fabulous silver-studded gown worn that night by statuesque actress Stacy Keibler? Both were designed by the talented Naeem Khan – so you can guess our giddy delight at learning that he would once again be featured at this year’s Celebrating Couture!
Even without the red carpet, Mr. Khan did not disappoint! He lit up the runway with luxurious creations in gold metallic embroidery, panné velvet, draped caftans with deco-beaded necklines, even a taffeta ball skirt with cigarette pants – all pieces from his fall 2013 collection, which he describes as Byzantine embroidery mixed with a 1920s Erté-inspiration reflecting texture and luxury.
It was an inspiring event to say the least – and one that was certainly for a good cause. For the last 20 or so years, the Globe Guilders – the all-volunteer auxiliary supporting The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego – has hosted Celebrating Couture, a charity silent auction and fashion show that raises funds for their education and community outreach programs. It’s an event which has previously featured world-renowned designers such as Oscar De La Renta and Carolina Herrera…making it a must-do for theater supporters and the city’s fashionistas!
This year, the event, held at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, celebrated its 24th year and attendees – 600 of them – came ready to toast to culture and fashion! The ballroom was abuzz with large round tables filled with beautifully dressed women and littered with champagne glasses. When the lights dimmed and the music started, the fashion show began and I can only imagine that every woman in the room had the same fantasy: a glittering vision of ourselves beautifully draped in one of Naeem Khan’s designs.
